Deborah (Deb)'s Story

After nearly 8 years living in England, I've repatriated to Des Moines, IA. I'm not sure how long I'll be here, though. Not only do I have a serious case of wanderlust I haven't really found a sense of place here. Once I jettisoned my childhood dream of being a Broadway star, I pursued various paths following a single theme: applying psychological theory to the masses. Over the years my choice of application and educational study took various directions. I spent about 16 years in political public relations, as a campaign staffer, director and in public office. I also had a career in organizational development, and 35 years doing one aspect or another of marketing/advertising. I've had three major avocations/passions, two of which morphed into mini-careers. I'm a master gardener. I've designed, planted and cultivated ornamental gardens in two countries and several states. I had two horticulture related businesses (Thank you, Mr. A): as a cut flower grower/retailer with dabblings in floristry and landscaping, and as a member of the horticulture oversight committee and caretaker/curator of the rose gardens at a world class foundation-owned garden. I've truly enjoyed the therapeutic, technical, physical and creative/artistic aspects of gardening. The earth is my canvas and plants are my palette. That said, I'm choosing to create with much smaller ...Expand for more
canvases these days. I've also applied similar passion and skills to home renovation and staging as an investment home owner. That pursuit is one that still appeals to me, but also on a smaller scale. I've lived in 6 states and in England and traveled extensively. However, "home" was primarily in the Puget Sound region of Washington. That's where I raised my family, and where my two wonderful sons remain. Chances are that I will relocate there within the next few years, although I'll probably return to the Phoenix area temporarily. In high school I was distracted by family and cultural issues and didn't work very hard at making a place for myself. I never truly committed to being a particularly social or serious student. In my heart, I'd already moved on. I just didn't know the "where and what" of it. Part of that is attributable to being a liberal. It isn't easy growing up liberal in the most conservative part of the state. I do have one predominant unfulfilled dream. I love to write and have done a lot of it within the context of various professional and personal venues. I'd love to, and just might morph that passion into a new venture(s). By the way, that Q and A is lame. It didn't even offer blues or standards as music choices. So folks, that's my story in a nutshell, and I'm sticking with it. Oh, and I'm currently single/divorced.
